Sponsored content is something talked about a lot in the blogging community: it's a gateway to making your blog more than just a hobby, but a source of income as well. It's only very recently that my blog has started providing me with a stable monthly income and while that income is quite small, it's definitely nice to have a bit of extra cash floating about each month. Today, I'm going to share with you how I get sponsored posts...
Putting Yourself Out There
I am very lucky to have a close group of blogging friends who share their contacts with me, so whenever they get a sponsored post opportunity, they hand over the email and I drop those people an email too. More often than not, I'm ignored or told that there's no budget left for bloggers, but sometimes I get a positive reply of people wanting to work with me which is amazing. Most of the sponsored content that you see on my blog started out with me approaching the brand or PR, not the other way around. I did a post a little while back about approaching brands as a smaller blogger, so check that one out if you want some more tips on how to approach PRs and what to say to them. I am a firm believer in contacting brands rather than waiting around for them to contact you.
Join Facebook Groups
A lot of my sponsored content comes from being a part of Facebook blogger groups. In these groups, PRs will share links and opportunities and this is how I get quite a lot of my link-based sponsored content. I have the notifications for this group on so whenever a new opportunity arises, I am always notified and always applying. Quite often I don't get selected, probably due to my low DA, but I think it's always worth a shot. Usually you apply via Google Forms and it takes five minutes to fill the form out, and totally worth it if you get a sponsored opportunity from it! The group that I recommend the most is UK Blogger Opportunities - it's really active and I apply for so many sponsored ops through there!
Always Asking for a Budget
Whenever I am contacted by a brand, I always, without fail, ask if there's a budget. A lot of times, the answer will be no but sometimes brands do have a budget, they just don't want to disclose it at first. For example, for my T-Zone post, I asked them about a budget when they were initially only going to send me samples and it turns out that they did have a budget and I got paid for that post. Sometimes it takes a little perseverance with a brand or PR into getting a budget, but I find that often with blogging if you don't ask then you don't get - so I always ask! If a brand isn't paying you but is dictating when you should put your post up or asking for multiple posts, that's a very good time to push for a payment.
I'm so proud of the opportunities that I get through blogging and while many people are afraid to talk about sponsored content, I feel like it needs to be talked about more in the community. It feels incredible that one day updating my little slice of the internet with silly musings could potentially be my job.
This is such a helpful post! I wish I was close enough to a couple of bloggers who could share PR contact details, so nice to support each other. I have requested to join the UK Blogger Opportunities group too :) xx

I love having my group of blogger friends to share PR contacts with! We all help each other and it’s amazing!
DeleteYou've got some lovely tips here for sponsored posts! I'll be sure to take these on board.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear it!
DeleteI always love your sort of "how to be a better blogger" posts, I feel like you're my mum of blogging sometimes, haha! They always give such great advice and end up in my bookmarks a lot so thank you! I've just been offered my first paid opportunity from a brand and I'm so excited!

Alice!!! That’s fantastic news!!! Congratulations my lovely ❤️❤️❤️
DeleteI'd also add checking the #prrequests hash tag on Twitter; you get a load of rubbish but if you stick with it long enough you do find some opportunities in there! I can't bare it when people don't put themselves out there and then moan they aren't getting the same opportunities as everyone else. It's such a competitive industry (however much we wanna say it's not a competition) and with so many amazing bloggers, you need to put yourself out there, brightly and boldly. Great post (:

I hardly ever find stuff on that hashtag because it’s so saturated with bloggers promoting themselves! I’ve never got a sponsored op through that! :)
DeleteBrilliant advice. I've contacted brands before - it pays to be proactive! x
ReplyDeleteI'm incredibly particular about what sponsored posts I do. If I really like a company/product, I will accept just the product for free. Some I do request payment. It just depends on the company for me. I'll only promote things that I know will fit in with my blog too! I didn't know about the FB group though!

DeleteI always feel so cheeky asking for a budget, but if it works then it works, so it's definitely worth an ask I guess! I need to join more Facebook groups too. Great post Chloe, it's so helpful xx
ReplyDeleteHannah | luxuryblush
I always do! I’ve kind of gotten immune to it!
DeleteGreat post! Really handy if I’m ever lucky enough to do a sponsored post! Xxxxxxx

I find twitter hashtags so hard to find ops from 🙃
DeleteYou should be incredibly proud of your sponsored content Chlo! You absolutely deserve it! I'm also a huge believer in contacting brands as my mum always taught me "if you don't ask, you don't get"! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Chloe! I am really proud of myself for what I’ve achieved in such a small space of time & see so many tweets from people who are disheartened that they haven’t had any yet! I wanted to share my tips because I don’t have opportunities just fall at my feed - I quite often ask for them xx
DeleteIt's great to see bloggers talking openly about sponsored content - I've been shamed for doing sponsored posts before by people within the community who disapprove of being paid to blog, but I think it's great that you can start to monetize your hobby if you want to! UK Blogger Opportunities is a fantastic FB page and I've worked with some fab brands through there as well - approaching brands can be so nerve wracking but the worst they can say is no, right? Great post!
ReplyDeleteAbbey 😘 http://www.abbeylouisarose.co.uk
My sentiments exactly, Abbey! I want to be open about it too: there’s nothing wrong with getting paid for what we love! ❤️
DeleteFirst off congratulations on all the sponsored opportunities you have gained! I think this is something we definitely need to talk about more rather than less, and I need to contact brands more haha. I've started to send emails and definitely think it's key but I haven't sent very many yet. Xx
ReplyDeleteKristy | www.thevioletblonde.com
Thank you Kristy! You should send emails out! It’s got me so many ops! X
DeleteThis is such an honest, insightful post Chloe, so thanks so much for sharing! I'm so clueless when it comes to this side of blogging, so it's so interesting to hear that you've got most of your sponsored opportunities from reaching out to the brands yourself! Definitely going to try your tips xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Sabrina, I am glad you found it so interesting. Hope you have some success using my tips xx
DeleteThis is really helpful!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteAsking about their budget is a really clever tip, I've done that once in the past before and it always shocks me when all of a sudden they say they do have a budget!
ReplyDeleteJulia // The Sunday Mode
I always do, because often they don’t like to tell you about it but brands sometimes do give PRs a budget for bloggers!
DeleteSome great tips here! I agree you should always ask if theres a budget, I can understand they don't mention it to start with to see if bloggers will do it for free which saves them money. Most brands do have budgets though and bloggers have a right to be paid for their work! xx
ReplyDeleteExactly Chlo xx
DeleteI love that you are talking about these things! A lot of newer bloggers have no idea how it all works, I had no idea when I got my first sponsored post and there is just no information out there!! xx
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dreamsandlashes.com
When I got my first sponsored opp I had no idea what to do, I didn’t even know how to do an invoice!
DeleteGreat post, I will certainly have a look at the Blogger Opportunity on Facebook!
ReplyDeleteThank you! xox
Great xx
DeleteI've been blogging for over two years now, but I'm so new to sponsored content and receiving goodies to review so I literally feel like I have no idea what I'm doing! It feels so rewarding to get paid for a post and it gets me excited for the future, as I would love for my blog to be my job one day xo
ReplyDeleteChar | www.charslittleblog.co.uk
It’s so rewarding! Best feeling ever! Xx
DeleteChlo this is such a helpful post! I'm so bad at getting excited and forgetting to ask for a budget!
ReplyDeletePaleGirlRambling xo
I always do it 😹
DeleteCongratulations on getting a stable income from your blog!
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for such helpful and informative post)
I think, my blog is too small for sponsorships but this post will definitely help me in future! xo

You’re never to small xx
DeleteCongratulations on your achievements! I've only just started my blog but this is great advice for the future, thank you so much!

This is so helpful thank you! Do you send them a media kit or just an email? I feel like my stats may not be good enough for a media kit haha!

This is really helpful! I'm trying to only take on work that is paid now, but I'm so unsure about how much to charge :(
ReplyDeleteThis super helpful, thank you! I find it really awkward asking about a budget when the company doesn't initially state one.

This is a very helpful post. I'll be sure to add this things to my blogging resolution for 2018. Although I haven't seen any Facebook groups for blogging opportunities here in Nigeria but I'll look closely from now on. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Tag: http://bit.ly/2BLAp6o
This is really helpful so thank you for posting. I've joined the UK Blogger Opportunities group so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up. I've got my first brand collab lined up for this month which I had organised through spotting a twitter post looking for bloggers. It's definitely hard as a small blog with a small DA but I know there will be things out there for me :)
